Avian synanthropy, which includes urbanized and urbanizing birds, is a common ecological relationship, to which at least 25% of North American birds can be referred. Species known to be specialists on early stages of ecological succession, as well as habitat generalists, may be predisposed to be synanthropic. Examples of synanthropes are various insect species ( lice, ants, silverfish, cockroaches, et.), house sparrows, rock doves (pigeons), various rodent species, Virginia opossums, raccoons, certain monkey species, coyotes, urban ferals, and other urban wildlife. Biological synanthropy refers to human-mediated symbioses. Synanthropic birds are thus avian symbionts of humans.

Bird population change, even for synanthropic species, showed a significant negative relationship with relative human population change and crop yield (but this was weak, <2% and 6% of variance respectively), and this relationship was the same for the Neotropics and Africa, despite African human population change being three times larger.
